The Farmer’s Daughter Sewing Studio
Sewing Classes
$8 Level 1 Sewing-
Making a Skirt
In this class you will learn the beginning steps of cutting, straight seam sewing, and fitting. If you already know these principles, you are ready for another class! There is no pattern needed for this class.
Materials needed: Fabric- Calico or Chambray, thread and 1” elastic-contact me for amounts as they vary depending on your measurements. Est. class length is 2-3 weeks.
$8 Level 1a Sewing-
T-Shirt Dress
More practice on straight seam sewing, and you learn gathering! Again, no pattern.
Materials: T-shirt, coordinating cotton fabric, interfacing, thread.
Est. class length is 2 weeks.
$8 Level 1b Sewing-
Pajama Pants or Pantalettes
Now you will be learning the skill of sewing on a curve and reading a pattern!
Simplicity pattern #2811 for women, and Simplicity# 3553 for girls.
Materials: Pattern, elastic, Calico or Novelty fabric for Pajamas. For Pantalettes (these will be a little shorter, so no-one can see them under your dress) solid white broadcloth (poly/cotton) or muslin (100%cotton). Patterns are currently in stores.
Est. class length is 2-3 weeks.
Pattern of Your Choice
You pick the pattern- I teach you how make it!
This class is more expensive than the others- unless you have more than one student with the same pattern. This can easily be a one time class if you just need a little help. If you are by yourself, the class will be $12 a class.
Materials needed: pattern, fabric and notions called for on pattern.
Est. class length is unknown!
$8-$12 Level 3 Sewing-
Converting a Pattern for Nursing-
In this class, I will demonstrate and teach how to make a nursing dress that doesn’t look like one! You can choose one of three patterns, bring the fabric and I will help you fit, cut, and assemble the bodice. You finish the dress on your own. What you take away from this class is the ability to convert almost any dress pattern for nursing- and how to tell which patterns will and won’t work. If there is more than one student, the class is $8.
Materials needed: pattern, fabric, all other notions and trims depend on which pattern you choose. Est. class length is 2 weeks.
I will have some great patterns to work with soon!
All of these classes will equip you to-
>read a pattern, (except Level 1 and 1a)
>take your own measurements,
>cut the garment out (to fit you!)
> assemble the fabric from start to finish,
>while teaching sewing skills step-by-step.
Leaving you with a garment that you will enjoy and use!
Pricing
The classes are $8 per hour, per student, per class. Each class will last one to two hours, and will continue until the garment is done. Each class size limit is 4. They can be mother-daughter classes, all women, all girls, or a combination.
Remember that what you are paying for is not only one garment, but the knowledge and ability that will make you capable of making many, many garments in the future!
Class Times and Information
Class dates are Monday or Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8:00 or Tuesday mornings from 9:30-11:00 at my house. The fall session will begin the first week of November. The next session will be in April.
Classes are chosen and filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Contact me about which class you are interested in, and which time slot you would prefer. You choose the class that you need, and you do not have to begin at Level 1, if you are ready for Level 2 or 3. I offer a discount off your first class of $1 for every student that you contact and will enroll with you. In example- if Suzy finds 3 other people who want to take the class with her, her first class will be half-price. If she finds just one, she will receive a one dollar discount. I have two machines, so any more than two students will require that you bring your own machine. You must have your own scissors and pins. All other supplies will be provided, and you will learn which supplies you will need to collect as you go.

I do not teach speed sewing techniques, although I am familiar with them. I believe a good foundation is essential to setting anyone on the road to independence. Once you understand how to read and apply most patterns, then you are ready to learn speed sewing. Until then, any speed sewing I teach will actually serve to confuse you when you try a new pattern.
I was taught to sew when I was 10, by my mother, when she taught two “KIDS CAN SEW!” classes for several girls. The patterns for the course were specially designed to be simple for children, but they were so ugly that we didn’t get much use out of them! I have revised my class to make garments that everyone enjoys, while retaining the class structure that worked so well. I am a patient teacher, yet I teach a high level of accuracy in a logical way, producing skills that will last a lifetime. I look forward to see you there!
